I just saw TLJ again (finally) and I was so struck that in the scene where he says, “You’re nothing,” there’s absolutely no malice in his voice. He says it almost kindly; he doesn’t spit the words at her or say them harshly. I feel that’s what makes that a heartfelt moment, rather than negging/manipulative, because I honestly don’t feel like he’s dangling that over her head, or even pitying her. He says it softly, affirming her own fears, and then follows up with “but not to me” as a way to soften the blow.
