FADE IN

Everyone goes over to the Byers’ house on their bikes, backpacks heavy with fun stuff.  Joyce offers to make snacks.

“That’s okay,” they say.  “We brought our own.”  They offer her the bag of convenience-store chips and off-brand snack cakes they got with their pooled allowances.  It has one of Joyce’s favorites in it.  Will bought it for her, and she gives him a hug.  Then she sits in the corner reading a book, having a nice time eating her favorite snack while she provides decent adult supervision to a bunch of middle schoolers.  At one point, a friend calls her, and they talk for twenty minutes about nice things, and laugh a lot.  The kids don’t do anything foolish during that time.

They spread out the snacks and a bunch of comic books on the floor of the family room and share them and talk about all the kinds of weird stuff kids like.  The strongest disagreement they have is handled by whacking each other with sofa cushions until Joyce tells them to settle down.

Once Dustin borrows the phone to call Steve for an opinion about something.  Steve is hanging out at home with Nancy and Jonathon, who are all also having a nice day.  He offers to drive them to the video game arcade later.  Everyone thinks that is awesome.

Lucas and Max share a comic book and argue good-naturedly about it.  Max tells a funny story about a thing Erica said while Lucas rolls his eyes but secretly loves it.

Jane hoards the X-Men comics and thinks about Kali when she reads about Dazzler and smiles.  Mike sees her smile and he smiles back at her and they share a quiet, happy moment.  Jane very shyly tells him about the nice memories she has of meeting her sister.  Mike thinks the stories are awesome.

Somewhere, far distant, the Sheriff feels a stirring of something dark.  Wait, no, it’s just the triple onion-and-pepper pizza he had for lunch.  He thinks about heating some leftovers up for dinner but decides to wait and see what his daughter wants when she gets home.  The camera slowly pans to a photo hanging on the wall.  It is a Sears Family Portrait of the Hopper family wearing matching sweaters.  It is adorable.

FADE OUT.
